||Students of the doctoral program develop their research across the axes of literary theory, history, and historiography; medium, format, and genre; and literary production, circulation, and reception. By approaching historical literary forms (poetry, drama, fiction, non-fiction) in relation to their modern and contemporary manifestations (digital poetics, sound recordings, video game studies, locative media), our students temper their comprehension of the history of literature with an awareness of the material and cultural aspects of media. The program trains students to engage with the worldliness of texts, and to challenge received acceptations of the high cultural category of the “literary” and its relations to larger networks of production more generally. By providing students with a broad background and assured theoretical orientation in historical and contemporary periods, the program helps students develop the intensive disciplinary self-consciousness that propels the renewal of the field.
The Ph.D. program involves coursework, two comprehensive examinations, a series of professional development seminars, the submission of a thesis prospectus, and independent research toward the completion of a dissertation project. Additionally, students are required to demonstrate reading knowledge of a language, other than English, of demonstrated relevance to their program of research.
