Program Information
Faculty: Faculty of Dentistry
Degree: Master
Field of Study: Oral/Maxillofacial Surgery (Cert., MS, PhD)
Description The program in oral and maxillofacial surgery is designed to provide candidates with a comprehensive background for the practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery as a speciality, as well as prepare them for examinations by the Royal College of Dentists in Canada and the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. First-year residents will be required to complete courses of study in gross anatomy, surgical anatomy, and physical diagnosis. They will also be responsible for admission and diagnostic work-up of in-patients and be permitted to operate in selected instances. The second year of the program consists primarily of off-service rotations. These rotations consist of anaesthesia, general surgery, surgical intensive care unit, internal medicine, oral pathology, and emergency. The third year of the program is divided between research and clinical oral and maxillofacial surgery. During the clinical portion of this year, residents will begin to assume responsibility for the overall care of all inpatients and outpatients. They will be given the opportunity for greater clinical and operating room experience and will be permitted to perform more complex oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures. Finally, the fourth year of the program is divided amongst the surgical elective, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and research for the Master of Science thesis. Residents will also be expected to perform a sufficient number and variety of complex oral and maxillofacial procedures in order to become proficient in all phases of the discipline.
