Description The doctoral program in biology is research-intensive with an emphasis on creativity and innovation. Guided by a research supervisor and committee members, students develop expertise and master modern research methodology while expanding their knowledge and analytical and critical thinking skills. Students also develop an in-depth understanding of current scientific literature and enhance communication skills. The main fields of research include cell biology, biochemistry, conservation biology, ecology and behaviour, evolutionary biology, genomics, microbiology, molecular biology, plant biology, population genetics, and proteomics.

A complete application includes an application fee, recent transcript, statement of purpose and indication of research area of interest. The statement of purpose should clearly articulate your interests in graduate studies and why you feel those interests will be best pursued in the Biology Department. In addition to the academic requirements, acceptance into biology graduate programs is contingent upon a minimum financial support of $15,000 a year. Full- time doctoral students without scholarship support will receive a minimum of $15,000 annually in return for work as teaching and laboratory research assistants. This funding will be renewable for two years at the PhD level, contingent upon satisfactory performance. Students admitted to the graduate programs are not ordinarily permitted to work outside the university.
