Description:
The Ph.D. program trains qualified individuals for careers in research, development, and teaching. The Ph.D. degree is considered a research degree and it is awarded primarily for creative work and originality. Stress is laid on the development of independent research. Upon completion of the program, the successful student will not only have contributed to the field of knowledge, but will also have developed skills as an independent, professional scientist. A series of graduate courses is required, but the remainder of the program is flexible and can be tuned to meet the specific needs of the student. Most students require four to five years study to complete the Ph.D. degree. Applicants with a Bachelor's degree may apply directly to the Ph.D. program; an M.Sc. degree is not an admissions requirement. |

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Prerequisites:
The minimum academic standard for admission to the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree programs is normally a high second-class standing (CGPA > 3.00). Applicants from other institutions should have an academic background equivalent to that of a McGill graduate in the Honours/Major programs in Chemistry or related fields such as Physics or Biochemistry. If possible, candidates should specify the field of research in which they are interested.

Test Scores:
- TOEFL (CBT) [min. 233] or TOEFL (iBT) [min. 90] or TOEFL (PBT) [min. 577]
Application fee - $100 - see web-based application for information. http://www.mcgill.ca/gradapplicants/apply/prepare/checklist/documents/
Two (2) letters of recommendation - Letters must be current (not more than 6 months old) and sent directly by the referee to the Graduate Studies Coordinator. Candidates are encouraged to request recommendations from academic or other professional employers who can evaluate their potential for graduate study and/or speak knowledgeably about their accomplishments.
Two (2) official copies of all university academic transcripts - Transcripts written in a language other than English or French must be accompanied by a certified translation. An explanation of the grading system used by the applicant's university is essential.
TOEFL scores - International students who have not received their instruction in English must pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score 90 (with no less than 20 in each section).
GRE scores - International students may be asked to write the GRE test - both the General Test and the Advanced Test in Chemistry.
