The Department has as its mission to maintain the traditions and study of the great classics as well as to provide a window on an increasingly complex and diverse contemporary Italian culture. It promotes the study of the Italian language through an excellent and rigorous language training program. It offers courses in Italian literature, both in Italian and in English, as well as in Italian film. The department periodically invites scholars specializing in contemporary politics, the Italian immigrant experience and social change, enabling students to gain both a broader and more critical understanding of various aspects of Italian culture, through contact with specialists in these areas.

Prerequisites:

The B.A. degree with Honours or Joint Honours in Italian or its equivalent and a CGPA of 3.2 constitute the minimum requirement. Applicants who do not have these prerequisites may be admitted to a Qualifying year or, in some cases, to a Qualifying term.

Online application. Two certified copies of all university transcripts (all transcripts not in English or French must be accompanied by a certified English or French translation). Two letters of recommendation (in English or French). $100 application fee. Test results: TOEFL required of all applicants to graduate studies whose mother tongue is not English, and who have not completed an undergraduate or graduate degree from a recognized foreign institution where English is the language of instruction or from a recognized Canadian institution (anglophone or francophone). Minimum score of 86, with each component score not less than 20, required on the Internet-based TOEFL examination. Proof of TOEFL must be presented at time of application or shortly thereafter. Sample of written work. Statement of academic intent. For Italian Studies only: a sample critical essay, written in Italian.
